Miss Bala

This movie will forever be etched in my mind for being the last movie I watched on cable before I cancelled it. Take that Time Warner! And they deserve to be cancelled if no other reason, the channel guide description of this film stated something like "A young woman dreams of become a beauty contestant in Mexico." That would be like describing The Godfather as "A young man comes home from the war to visit his family."

But yes, the movie is about a young woman who dreams of becoming a beauty contestant. But take one look at the poster and you'll see that it is about a hell of a lot more than that. Shit happens, man. And then more shit happens. One crazy thing after another but it never feels unrealistic or stupid. In fact, it is based on a true story of a beauty queen forced to do a drug gang's bidding. It is entertaining as hell and is also an interesting look on the impact the drug wars are having on regular people in Mexico. I highly recommend this film.
